%aCENTER FOR COMPUTER RESEARCH IN MUSIC AND ACOUSTICS
%1Department of Music
Stanford University

%1Current Status of Funding for Center
.end
.begin fill adjust
The plan for funding the center has been worked out with the National Science
Foundation (NSF) and with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as a
first-time joint funding venture which reflects the cross-disciplinary research
interests of the Center. We have asked NSF to support the research personnel
for the first 24 months and NEA to provide funds for the computing equipment
as a one-time cost. Mr. Walter Anderson, Music Program Director of NEA,
indicated that their support would depend upon Stanford University being able
to locate 1/2 the required costs for the equipment, which would then be matched
by NEA through their Treasury Fund Program.

The current state of the three parts is as follows:

%aNSF:%1 requested $321,000 for personnel
.begin narrow 7,7
At the present time we have a commitment from NSF for $255,000, which is
short of our needs for personnel by $66,000. We plan to make up this
difference through support from another NSF program or through non-government
funds. The grant from NSF is contingent upon the NEA matching grant for the equipment.

%aNEA:%1 requested $125,000 for computing equipment

A recent meeting of NSF and NEA representatives indicates that the request
from NEA is `hopeful' and a decision should be made before February, 1975.

Stanford has so far been unable to locate the matching funds required by NEA.

Nature and purpose of computing equipment:
.end
The proposed equipment consists of a general computing system optimized
for the purposes of research in acoustics and composition. The system
will be the most advanced in the world and fully capable of supporting
the work of students in the university as well as guests of international
reputation, such as Pierre Boulez, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Luciano Berio,
all of whom have indicated interest in working at such a facility.
